Part I: This basic 28-hour mediation training focuses on an understanding of the mediation process, communication skills, problem-solving skills, agreement writing, and mediation ethics. Mediation skills are taught in a highly interactive format through short lecture, group discussion, focused exercises, and coached role-play. The workshop is designed to prepare the participant for mediation in civil cases. In addition, this intense four-day experience is designed to hone life skills that can enhance the participant’s ability to interact effectively with others. The training provides an understanding of the theory behind conflict while developing an effective skillset in resolving conflict. The workshop meets general mediation training requirements for registration with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution (GODR). In addition, the workshop is approved for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) hours (28 regular and 3 ethics).
Part II: General Civil Mediation Practicum: 12 Hours
The 12 hour practicum will build upon the skills introduced during the General Civil Mediation Training. It provides an opportunity for you to observe, reflect on, and discuss the practice of mediation. The Practicum may be taken in lieu of 5 real case observations in mediation for the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution registration purposes.
OBJECTIVES:
Participants will develop a fundamental understanding of the core requirements necessary in conducting civil mediation: concepts introduced are: core resolution concepts; mediation process and techniques; communication, diversity issues, negotiation dynamics; mediator's code of ethics; and the attorney/mediator/client role in mediation.

PLEASE NOTE: GODR Required for all trainings: The fact that a training program has been approved by the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution does not imply that any particular court-annexed or court referred program must or will accept as neutrals those who have completed that program. Trainees have 18 months from the last date of training to apply for registration with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolution or the training expires. Please visit www.godr.org to read these rules thoroughly. The workshop is approved for CLE hours for 12 hours of general credits.
