Open to everyone interested in discussing race in research, art, practice, and life, the BKC Race+Tech+Media Working Group supports professional goals and our holistic selves. In this session, the BKC Race+Tech+Media Working group features Roslyn Satchel on Black history, race, tech, and media + Nicole Bush and Christianna Clark on Black sex workers’ digital practices.
Nicole Bush and Christianna Clark (fae/faer), present “In this autoethnographic study, we build upon Are’s (2021) previous study about Meta’s practice of “shadowbanning” pole by exploring how the sociopolitical aspects of social media platforms and digital sex work amplify and rework the sexist and racist hegemonic strategies employed by social media companies as well as the tactics the author and other sex workers engage in to create a livable life for themselves, in increasingly hostile digital media environments (Kelly, 1994). Our two voices work together to explore digital sex work labor on a post-Backpage.com internet. Through narrative and thick description, we demonstrate that Black sex workers’ digital practices are changing how people think about sex work and perform digital labor in the wake of SESTA/FOSTA.”
Presented by the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University’s Race+Tech+Media Working Group 2023-24. Coordinators Jenny Korn and Roslyn Satchel.
