Best Practices to Teaching Race and other Sensitive Topics in Today’s Classroom
Event Type: Virtual
Facilitator: Rodolfo Aguilar
What role does teaching race, and other related subjects such as gender, class, or immigration have in U.S. college classrooms? Often, faculty —disproportionally women of color—are met resistance when teaching race and other sensitive topics (Grahame, 2004). Yet, the study of race and other challenging material is necessary for university and colleges students to examine what it means to be human in today’s complex world (Howard, 2020). This session explores best teaching practices for teaching race, along with gender, or class and how to facilitate class discussions when these tense topics arise in respective classrooms.
