Pairing Active learning with Empathetic Teaching (Strategies for Student Success)

Active learning, paired with an empathetic approach to teaching, can dramatically transform learning environments for students. Active learning and empathetic teaching each have a broad research base supporting their implementation (Freeman et al, 2014); empathetic teaching (Narula, 2021). You might then wonder - how can I inclusively implement active learning to increase student buy in? How can I leverage empathic teaching approaches in designs for resilient, adaptable active learning experiences for engaging today’s students who are emerging from the effects of the pandemic? We will model several highly practical empathetic and active learning techniques applicable in any discipline / teaching modality. This workshop offers specific, easy to implement strategies and tools to increase student engagement from the syllabus to the last assignment. Note: identical versions of this workshop are scheduled on two different days in the same week.
