Title:
Principles of Autonomy for Active Perception by Robot Swarms by Dr. Fumin Zhang, Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Georgia Tech
Abstract:
Service robots have seen rapid developments during the last two decades. These robots may serve as networked mobile sensing platforms that are able to collect data in extreme environments in unprecedented ways, which post higher goals for autonomy never achieved before. My research program has discovered several principles for autonomy aiming for active data collection in a complex environment. These principles are motivated by the growing needs of robot swarms in applications including scientific data collection, search and rescue, aquaculture, intelligent traffic management, as well as human robot teaming. Certain principles are inspired by animal and human behaviors, and then translated into algorithms that solve difficult fundamental problems, and a few principles have been verified by real-world operations. The transition of these fundamental discoveries to swarm robot applications are enabled by a collection of systems, including software, platforms, and testbeds, developed in my research lab.
Short Bio:
Dr. Fumin Zhang is Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He received a PhD degree in 2004 from the University of Maryland (College Park) in Electrical Engineering, and held a postdoctoral position in Princeton University from 2004 to 2007. His research interests include mobile sensor networks, maritime robotics, control systems, and theoretical foundations for cyber-physical systems. He received the NSF CAREER Award in September 2009 and the ONR Young Investigator Program Award in April 2010. He is currently serving as the co-chair for the IEEE RAS Technical Committee on Marine Robotics, associate editors for IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, Robotics and Automation Letters, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, and IEEE Transactions on Control of Networked Systems.

About the Series:
The Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SPCEET) Seminar Series is designed to encourage the exchange of ideas within and across the college’s disciplines through research. We invite speakers from top research institutions and within SPCEET to give presentations on their ongoing and most recently completed research projects each semester.
The Seminar Series provides faculty, staff, and students an excellent opportunity to directly interact with leaders in their research areas, get valuable feedback on their ongoing work from peers, and create possibilities for high-impact collaboration.
