(Virtual) Center for Sustainable Journalism Lunch & Learn 14 — Allegra Abramo, Seattle-based freelance writer and reporter, Center for Sustainable Journalism — Sara Bernard, producer and host of “This Changes Everything” podcast for Crosscut, and audio producer, Center for Sustainable Journalism — Kelly Flynn, motion graphic designer, CNN, and animator, Center for Sustainable Journalism — "Behind the Scenes: Animating the Life of a Homeless Youth” — A discussion led by three of our freelancers who take the lead in our youth homelessness project in Seattle, supported by the Raikes Foundation. They will be talking about the immense amount of collaboration and experimentation that took place to make this project come to fruition by combining reporting, audio and animation. There will be a time to get your questions answered.

The Center for Sustainable Journalism aims to discover innovative ways to produce financially sustainable, high-quality and ethically sound journalism via applied research, collaborations and advancing innovative projects. It is a hub for the development of journalism models, journalism education and revenue streams that help make the news industry more diverse, sustainable and so crucial to democracy. CSJ publishes the JJIE, Youth Today and BokehFocus. As part of this mission, we are hosting a Lunch & Learn series for students, faculty, colleagues, friends, family, staff, our readers to gain exposure and experience from real-life professionals in various occupations. It is also a fantastic networking opportunity for students and provides them with valuable life skills.

Speaker Bios: 

 

Kelly Flynn, motion graphic designer, CNN, and animator, Center for Sustainable Journalism

Kelly Flynn is a designer with a bachelor's degree focused in computer animation from Ringling College of Art and Design. She has worked in creative roles that assist a variety of clients, such as Hasbro, UPS and Netflix in storyboarding, 3D modeling and animation. Previously, she worked at a post-production studio, which allowed her to expand her creativity, work as a video editor and lead the charge in the company's marketing design. Kelly also worked on CNN's Snapchat Discovery Channel and is currently working within the company on their Motion Graphic Design Team.


 

Sara Bernard, producer and host of “This Changes Everything” podcast for Crosscut, and audio producer, Center for Sustainable Journalism

Sara Bernard is a Seattle-based audio producer and graduate of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. She's the producer and host of “This Changes Everything,” a podcast for Crosscut about the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. A former staff writer for Seattle Weekly and producer of the podcast “Seattleland,” she's also written and produced stories in a variety of media for Grist, KUOW, KQED, Alaska Public Media and The Atlantic, among other outlets.

 

Allegra Abramo, Seattle-based freelance writer and reporter, Center for Sustainable Journalism

Allegra Abramo is a Seattle-based freelance writer whose stories and photos have appeared in The Seattle Times, ProPublica, NBCNews.com, Youth Today and a number of local publications. Prior to attending the City University of New York Newmark School of Journalism, she worked on environmental issues for nonprofits and local government. She also holds a Master of Public Administration and Master of Science in natural resources management from the University of Washington.
